We don't install the cheap ones
There's a reason this price list is short. A lot of what gets sold as a heat pump in Melbourne right now is built to hit a number, and it shows — it goes in cheap, and it comes back out inside a couple of years when the tank goes or the compressor gives up. By then the company that fitted it has often moved on, and the homeowner is paying for the same job twice.
We install three brands: Viva, NeoPower and Emerald Energy. Every one of them has been going on our vans long enough that we know how it behaves through a Melbourne winter, what fails first, and how the manufacturer actually handles a warranty claim when you ring them. Anything that didn't hold up, we stopped fitting.
We also install them ourselves — our own licensed electricians and plumbers, never subcontracted. So the workmanship is ours to stand behind, not somebody else's to argue about.

A heat pump moves heat — it doesn't make it
That's the whole trick, and it's why a heat pump can produce roughly four kilowatts of heat from one kilowatt of electricity while an old element system produces one for one.
Captures the air
A quiet fan draws in the surrounding air. The natural warmth in that air is soaked up by refrigerant inside the evaporator.
Boosts the heat
The compressor applies high pressure, concentrating that energy and raising the temperature far above ambient levels.
Transfers the energy
Heat moves through the condenser wrapped around your tank and into the water. The refrigerant cools back into a liquid.
Repeats
The cooled refrigerant returns to the start. The cycle repeats automatically until your water reaches temperature.

210–220L
Up to 3 people, or a unit or townhouse with one bathroom and modest usage.
270L
3–4 people. This is the size most Melbourne homes need and the one we install most often.

5+ people, or a household with high demand — long showers, back-to-back use, a spa bath.
If you're still on gas hot water, this is where the saving is
Burning gas to heat water is one of the most expensive ways left to do it in Victoria. A heat pump does the same job for a fraction of the running cost, because it moves heat rather than burning something to create it — the same principle as reverse cycle air conditioning.
We're licensed plumbers, so the gas side is our work too. We decommission the old unit, cap the gas line and take the unit away on the same visit. You don't need to organise a second trade or a separate appointment.
If your hot water is the last gas appliance in the house, it's worth asking us about disconnecting the gas supply altogether — the daily supply charge on a gas connection runs whether you burn anything or not.

What is a heat pump hot water system?
A heat pump uses electricity to extract heat from the surrounding air and move it into your water, rather than generating heat directly. That makes it far more energy-efficient than a traditional electric element system — a good unit converts 1kW of electricity into around 4kW of heat.
How much can I save with a heat pump?
Most households reduce hot water energy costs by around 60–70%, depending on usage and system type. Hot water is typically the second-largest energy cost in a Melbourne home after heating.
Can you install a heat pump in my existing home?
Yes. We can replace most existing electric or gas hot water systems with a heat pump. A straight swap-over on an existing electric unit is the simplest case and is what the base rates assume.
How long does the install take?
Typically 45 minutes to 3 hours. A standard swap-over is usually completed quickly — and because we hold both the electrical and plumbing licences, we don't have to book a second trade to come back another day.
What size do I need?
As a rule of thumb: 210–220L suits up to 3 people or a one-bathroom home, 270L suits 3–4 people and is what most Melbourne homes need, and 320L suits 5+ people or heavy hot water use. We'll confirm it based on how your household actually uses hot water, not on what carries the best margin.

Do heat pumps work in Melbourne winters?
Yes. The units we install operate in ambient temperatures down to −7°C, which is well below anything Melbourne produces. Efficiency does drop as the air gets colder, which is why we size on your actual usage rather than assuming the rated figure applies on the coldest morning of the year.
Am I eligible for the Solar Victoria rebate?
Broadly: household taxable income under $150,000 a year, you own the property, it's valued under $3 million, the system you're replacing is at least three years old, the property isn't a new build, and it hasn't received the same rebate before. Solar Victoria makes the final decision. We'll check it with you on the first call.
